Capricorn Society Ltd has recently announced support for a startup that came out of the recent Startup Weekend. One Click Cars, created by IDEA Academy student, Harrison will gain funding from Capricorn to participate in Plus Eight Sprint, a six-week business development program taking place later this year.

The IDEA Academy is a new entrepreneurial school for Year 11 and 12 students, and was itself a graduate of last year’s Plus Eight tech accelerator. Its co-founders, Nicole Gazey & Rebecca Loftus, were interviewed on Startup West podcast in June.

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour event where startups get to be part of building a business over a madcap weekend, Silicon Valley-style. It’s all about pitching, business model creation, prototyping, designing and market validation in a friendly and supportive team environment.

The latest Startup Weekend wrapped up just ten days ago, on 14 August. After the final pitches had been done and dusted, and winners announced, ScamAlarm was placed first, winning the Spacecubed sponsorship to participate in Plus Eight Sprint. CarMatch came in 2nd, winning the Capricorn Society Ltd challenge and securing sponsorship to participate in Sprint. In 3rd place was Netic, another startup created by IDEA Academy students, marking the youngest participants in Perth’s Startup Weekend history.

As sponsors, we were really amazed at the quality of the pitches and innovative ideas the teams were able to produce in a short space of time.

The 16 to 17-year-olds from the IDEA program came up with some solutions to real-world problems that we’ll continue to support and explore with them

Kim Radalj, General Manager for Innovation and Corporate Development at Capricorn Society Ltd.

The Sprint six-week business development program will kick off later this year to see where the selected startups lead and develop their start-up ideas during the Sprint process.
