SPUR – Landgate’s innovation hub – has been around for over 10 years, has helped over 150 startups and is surveying the local sector to see what startups need…

Innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum but those operating at the pointy edge of disruption often realise they are working beyond the reach of integral services.

Service providers to the startup ecosystem need to keep lockstep with the challenges of the industry in order to spur startups on their journey.

Some years ago, understanding it had a rich bank of data to share, Landgate launched SPUR – an innovation, technology, data and services hub that supports WA government, businesses, startups and individuals to develop innovative products and services using location data collated from Landgate’s core business activities.

This year, SPUR is actively testing its assumptions about the needs of Western Australian startups by asking the community ‘what’s holding you back?’

Is it funding? Data? Acumen? Connections?

“We’ve helped over 150 WA location data startups on their journey,” said General Manager SPUR, Peter Markham.

“Fintech startup Moneycatcha used a SPURonWA grant and a Developer’s Licence to access data to test their blockchain innovation. They’ve successfully formed partnerships with financial institutions to trial their products for use.

“That’s just one example of a fantastic outcome for WA. We want to continue to break down the barriers to startup success,” Peter said, “and because we live in a fast-changing, disruptive world we’re asking startups to tell us the services they need that will make a difference and spur on their journey.”

SPUR has released a survey to gather data about what’s challenging WA startups now and into the future. The results will be used to hone SPUR’s services, namely how Landgate’s unrivalled bank of location data continues to be shared with WA businesses and startups.

If there is sufficient interest from the Startup-sphere, SPUR will also hold a workshop to socialise the results with the community.

SPUR is calling on all startups to complete their survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SPURStartups.

The survey closes 17 October 2018 and respondents go in the draw to win one hour of Q&A with Peter Markham.
