A few months after graduating from Curtin Ignition program, founder Thomas Beresford has launched BackyardMarket from his home in Mandurah…

A new online marketplace has launched which is trying to solve Australia’s food security problem by releasing potentially wasted food in peoples’ backyards and opening that up to others in the local community.

Mandurah-based BackyardMarket has opened up a new online marketplace for backyard products with a mission of creating a food secure society through backyard fruit and vegetables. The platform went live on 5th January 2019.

“Through BackyardMarket we want to take advantage of fruit and vegetables that normally falls on the floor in backyards and farms across Australia… it is imperative that we tackle the food waste epidemic head on and this is why BackyardMarket was created.” – Thomas Beresford, Director of BackyardMarket told Startup News.

Users of the platform can search, buy, sell, barter and even donate different products from your backyard … from old pots and plants to seeds and of course fruit and vegetables.

The platform is free to use with subscription plans available for businesses and growers who want to sell more.

The first idea came in August 2017 when Thomas was perplexed about food waste and the idea of making fresh produce in local communities affordable for everyone.

A year later, Thomas decided to take part in the 2018 Curtin Ignition program, and it was here the final ideas behind the site, the name and branding took place. A three-month sprint then ensued to make the site ready for public launch.

“It has been a long journey to get here and I’d like to thank all the people who have help BackyardMarket get to this stage, people in the Perth startup scene have been amazing and always willing to help,” said Thomas.
