SPUR, Landgate’s technology and innovation hub, is offering $100,000 in grant funding (‘SPURonWA’ grants) for location based tech ideas, which can land up to $25,000 each.

The SPURonWA grants are part of Landgate’s response to the State Government’s strategy to support growth of local businesses, improve government service delivery and reduce operating costs of government and industry.

“The SPURonWA grants are supporting local entrepreneurs and innovators, by establishing new industries and creating jobs of the future,” said Minister for Transport, Planning and Lands Hon Rita Saffioti.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be WA based and propose a new product or service using location information in an innovative way.

“Any idea that relies on the use of location information could be eligible,” SPUR General Manager Peter Markham explained. “People don’t realise how essential location information is to our lives and that we use it every day; when we turn on our GPS or use an app that links us to a service. It’s any piece of information that pinpoints where something is.”

What can be funded?

Grants can be used for costs such as prototyping, testing, engineering, website/ application development or an investment in business, marketing, legal advice or intellectual property protection.

SPUR also offers services to startups like affordable access to data via a SPUR Developer’s Licence, access to commercialisation and data expertise, connections to government and industry, and co-working space at Landgate’s Midland and Perth offices.

SPUR Winner off to Ignition

In other news, SPUR has announced Leanne Bicknell as winner of its Curtin Ignition 2018 scholarship.

Leanne’s startup, Risk Report, is a cloud-based platform using geospatial information systems (GIS) and defined data sets to reduce the resourcing requirements and recovery period of critical incidents on complex sites, while increasing response success rate.

Leanne demonstrated a clear market need for the location information-based services provided by her business.

The scholarship allows Leanne to attend Curtin Ignition this week, an intensive 5 ½ day education program for aspiring entrepreneurs, academics and corporate innovators to trial and prepare their business ideas for the commercial environment.

“I plan to improve my knowledge of sales and marketing for the promotion of Risk Report”, Leanne said. “I’m confident in my product. The skills I gain from access to Ignition experts will help me develop my pitch and create an effective sales and marketing strategy”.

General Manager SPUR, Peter Markham, congratulated Ms Bicknell on the award: “Developing new business skills through programs like Curtin Ignition is another way SPUR helps WA location data startups.  Leanne’s idea will clearly benefit business and the community by improving user efficiency and reducing operating costs in incident response”.

The SPUR team will catch up with Leanne post Ignition when she begins co-working at Landgate.
