Thanks to the ubiquitous smartphone, the availability and popularity of location data has soared over the past decade. With such technology on demand, businesses’ reliance on insights gained from location data has increased too.
‘Location data’ refers to the geographic positions of devices and structures such as company assets and buildings. The geographic location collected can include attributes such as latitude, longitude, altitude, elevation and horizontal accuracy.
Location data can also be used as a solution for consumer understanding. This in conjunction with other datasets allows businesses in a variety of industries to solve problems and facilitate the achievement of goals. Industries as widespread as real estate, transport, agriculture, information technology, and building and construction regularly use location data.
Understanding the power this data holds, Landgate – the Western Australian land information authority – is offering a scholarship for a WA-based First Nations applicant with a location data business idea, research project or early-stage venture to attend the Curtin Ignition program.
The annual program – now in its eleventh installment – is an intensive week course facilitated by Curtin University’s Executive Education department that seeks to assist aspiring entrepreneurs with preparing their ideas for a commercial environment.
Teachings of the course including development participants’ ability to explain a business opportunity in commercial terms, how to apply a commercial approach in order to develop innovative ideas and how to accelerate initiatives.
Landgate Chief Executive, Graeme Gammie, said the aim of the scholarship is to assist First Nations entrepreneurs who wish to build new and useful products and services using location data.
“Landgate is proud to be providing this opportunity for emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses,” Graeme said.
Aboriginal knowledge, experience and perspectives benefits our culture and the community. Location is a major part of everything we do at Landgate, which is why contribution from our State’s First Nations is so important.
Graeme Gammie, Landgate Chief Executive
Submissions for the Landgate scholarship will close on Friday 16 July.
