David Koopmans has been appointed the Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) of Gridcognition, after three years of serving as Chief Marketing Officer at construction tech scaleup Buildxact.
Gridcognition says this is a ‘strategic hire’ and “another step in the international commercialisation of [their] unique technology” that will see him lead the company’s commercialisation and growth strategy, having been awarded a $998k grant through the Accelerating Commercialisation (AC) programme.
Coming from a background of leading high-growth software companies to global expansion and market strategy, CEO Fabian Le Gay Brereton says that David will not only lead the company’s international market expansion, he will also be working with some of Australia’s leading energy innovators which include Ausnet Services, JetCharge and Evergen.
David believes that there is a “tremendous opportunity (to take) Gridcognition’s unique technology to help accelerate the energy system transition around the world”.
Decarbonising the world’s energy systems is one of the most exciting and important challenges we face. To date, it’s been too complex for companies looking to make confident investments in the distributed energy space. These projects integrate dynamic energy markets, power distribution networks, customer facilities, and smart inverter-based energy systems like solar, storage, and EV charging.

Gridcognition – the road to global expansion
From its birth in February 2020, Fabian and co-founder Pete Tickler have since assembled a team of data scientists, software engineers, and self-confessed ‘energy nerds’ to accelerate the transition to a fully decarbonised and decentralised energy system.
The startup provides software to plan and optimise distributed energy projects, including microgrids, virtual power plants, community energy projects, electric vehicle charging systems, and behind-the-meter renewable power plants.
The service helps energy providers, project developers, and energy users achieve the best commercial and environmental outcomes from the deployment and operations of these assets.
Last week, Gridcognition was a finalist in the WA Innovator of the Year Awards. The company has set its sights on making a global impact to accelerate decarbonisation and help tackle climate change and are always on the hunt for like-minded ‘learners’ to join their team.
