Unearthed Perth happened last weekend (April 8-10th) at Spacecubed, in partnership with Woodside and aimed at challenges in the Oil and Gas industry.
There were nearly 200 people there on the Friday evening to see the start of the event, and the air conditioning barely held out.
Over 100 people actually took part in the event, creating 22 teams. As a first for a Perth hackathon, not all teams got to pitch the main audience, with so many teams it was impossible to have everyone pitch. Seven teams were up on the 9th floor pitching a smaller audience. Which still left 15 pitches to go through, a gruelling 3 hours of solid team pitches.
There were four challenges posed to the teams by Woodside:
- Fitness for Work: Develop innovative solutions to identify a person’s FFW and physical well being
- Vessel Optimisation: Improve the utilisation of deck space on offshore supply boat
- Returns Rationalisation: Reduce Woodside’s current RoR (30%) to the industry average of 10%
- Direct Supply Purchasing: Provide a solution that effectively manages supply chain reliability
All four challenges saw some teams working on them, though the Fitness for Work and Vessel Optimisation problems seemed to be the favourites.
The winners were:
First Prize ($2500) to team Fat Controller
Members: Adrian Petersen, Alex Khor, Dylan Johnston, Ilyas Ridhuan, Mark Shelton, Michael Ford and Tom Smoker.
Challenge: Vessel Optimisation, A dynamic system for optimising vessel packaging and scheduling based on evolutionary algorithms generated from demand for Woodside’s supplies, which aim to minimise wasted deck space.
Second Prize ($1500) to team Bank Holiday
Members Al Harvey, Ben Dougherty, John Vial and Michael Evans
Challenge: Vessel Optimisation
Team Bank Holiday developed Ship Stream, a platform to produce vessel schedules using a optimisation algorithm. The platform goal is to free vessels for full days so they can be re-leased to other companies while still satisfying all delivery requirements. As more companies use the platform, the boat pool size will grow and the opportunity for optimisations would be improved.
Young Innovators Prize ($1000) to team NoReturnsDT
Members: Abdul Aziz, Ashwin D’Cruz, Melinda Hodkiewicz, Rohan Mehra and Tom McKeon
Challenge: Returns Rationalisation
The NoReturnsDT tool is a decision tree tool to predict which parts will be returned. It does this by parsing current data, analysing the data and visualising it to identify high likelihood returns.
CIIC Prize to team Ontrack
Members Daniel Narayan, Oliver Wasse, Ricky Baharwal, Sarada Lee and Sean Driver
Challenge: Fitness for Work
Ontrack developed a tracking system visualisation using RFID tags to plot, track and monitor the OH&S of individuals. Using data collected from fatigue monitoring, hours worked and general well being this solution identifies individuals who were at high risk and communicates with them in real time, prior to an incident occurring.

The event was a great success, there were some really good ideas here, and the response from the judges and Woodside itself were outstandingly positive. Well done to the Unearthed team for another great event.
Unearthed are also doing two more hackathons in the near future: NASA Challenge at Bloom Labs and the MineHack hackathon in partnership with BHP.
