The Curtinnovation Awards look to identify new technologies, products and services that have commercial potential.

In the past, this has come from research at Curtin, with previous winners including iCetana, REX Ortho, Renergi and Climate Clever.

Applications are judged against criteria including the level of innovation and commercial potential of the opportunity.

Although the Awards are normally reserved for current Curtin students and staff, the Covid-19 Pandemic has changed this.

For the first time since the Awards started in 2007, Curtin is now accepting applications from prospective students and current and prospective industry collaborators.

Curtin University Director of Commercialisation Rohan McDougall said the current health crisis highlights the need for us to think innovatively about problem solving.

“Crises often drive innovation and the current COVID-19 pandemic has put the spotlight firmly on the need for agility and innovation in the search for solutions to everyday problems,” Rohan said.

“The Curtinnovation Awards offer a fantastic opportunity for aspiring innovators to showcase their work alongside other industry professionals and researchers. This year we’re delighted to extend our search to the broader public and look forward to seeing new creative ideas that could one day be used in everyday applications.”

What is an idea worth?

This year, the total prize pool is valued up to $100,000. The main prize is $15,000 in cash, with five category prizes worth $5,000 each.

In addition, there are ten scholarships to the Curtin Ignition program (worth up to $3,250) and five scholarships to the Curtin Accelerate program (worth up to $5,000).
