// Western Australia’s top science and innovation awards are back — and this year, they’re bigger than ever.

Applications are now open for the 2025 Premier’s Science Awards, with a boosted prize pool of $140,000 and the introduction of two new categories recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence and scientific research within the WA Government.

The awards, now in their 25th year, celebrate the State’s brightest minds across research, education, science engagement, and STEM leadership. Winners and finalists join a long legacy of individuals whose work has shaped Western Australia and, in many cases, the world.

New categories shine a light on inclusion and government-led innovation

In a move welcomed by the science community, this year introduces the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scientist of the Year category. It aims to recognise the outstanding contributions made by First Nations scientists and researchers advancing knowledge across diverse fields.

Also new for 2025 is the Government Science Project of the Year, acknowledging impactful research being carried out within the WA public sector — a nod to the role government plays in scientific innovation and delivery.

Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson said the new categories “celebrate the extraordinary science and research conducted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people” and recognise “the excellent scientific research within the WA Government.”

Ten award categories and the return of People’s Choice

The full list of award categories now includes:

  • Scientist of the Year
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scientist of the Year
  • Mid-Career Scientist of the Year
  • Early Career Scientist of the Year
  • Student Scientist of the Year
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM Student of the Year
  • Government Science Project of the Year
  • STEM Educator of the Year – Schools (Primary or Secondary)
  • STEM Educator of the Year – Tertiary (University or Registered Training Organisation)
  • Science Engagement Initiative of the Year

The People’s Choice Award will also return after its successful debut in 2024, giving the public a chance to vote for their favourite finalist.

Recognising the best in WA science

Past winners of the Premier’s Science Awards include leaders in fields ranging from astrophysics to medical science. Last year, Professor Sharon Parker and Professor Markus Schlaich were jointly awarded Scientist of the Year for their globally recognised work in organisational psychology and cardiovascular health, respectively.

Winthrop Professor Fiona Wood AO and Professor Peter Quinn were inducted into the WA Science Hall of Fame, joining a cohort of WA’s most influential scientific contributors.

Premier Roger Cook said the awards not only celebrate outstanding individuals, but also help inspire future generations to pursue STEM careers.

“Award winners and finalists go on to become important ambassadors and role models for their field of work,” he said. “[They] inspire future generations to take up courses and careers in STEM.”

Applications now open

Applications for the 2025 Premier’s Science Awards — and nominations for the WA Science Hall of Fame — are open until 10:00 am, Monday, July 28th 2025.
