The need to diversify WA’s economy beyond the resources sector is well established. The mining industry continues to dominate, contributing 47% to the state’s GVA (Gross Value Add) by Industry. With 30% of the WA state budget spent on healthcare, the coronavirus pandemic is a reminder that our medtech, biotech and pharmaceutical sector continues to be front and centre of efforts to manage the spread of the virus and keep Australians healthy. It’s timely to push for further investment and support for WA’s innovative MTP sector.

So what should we be doing today to create a growing sector, what are the future opportunities for WA and will entrepreneurship and international focus help to get us there?

To address these questions, we’re pleased to welcome Dr Simon Graindorge and Colin La Galia who will bring their business insights and international experience in Europe and Asia to the discussion.

About the Speakers:

Dr Simon Graindorge has spent almost 20 years in the healthcare industry, with significant experience as an investor in medtech and digital health/healthtech.

Simon is currently Chief Operating Officer at OncoRes Medical and Entrepreneur-in-Residence (Life Sciences) at IP Group Australia.

With an executive background operating start-ups, Simon has extensive experience investing in, building and growing start-ups, early stage and emerging growth companies based on early-stage, deep tech innovations from leading research institutions.

Before returning to Australia in 2019 and joining IP Group Australia, Simon was a Partner in IP Group’s Life Sciences team in the UK, where he led portfolio and investments in medical and digital healthcare technologies. Over the last decade he has invested in and helped build companies such as Tissue Regenix Group plc, Oxehealth, Creavo Medical Technologies, Intelligent Ultrasound Group plc, Ibex Innovations, Pancregenesis. Simon joined IP Group from Ceramex Ltd, a corporate spin-out of the Hexadex Group, where his role as Operations Director covered all operational, product development and R&D.

Colin La Galia brings 25 years of national and international pharmaceutical, diagnostics and healthcare senior executive experience to the role of Chief Executive Officer at Epichem.

Colin was previously the Regional Business Director and Commercial Head of Asia Pacific, China and Japan for Abbott Rapid Diagnostics in Toxicology and he held senior executive roles over 20 years at Alere Inc, Origin Healthcare, Hollywood Fertility Centre, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck Sharpe & Dohme and AMRAD Pharmaceuticals.

Colin is an accomplished business and people leader with a strong track record of driving commercial success and revenue growth, having held a variety of leadership roles in Business Development & Market Creation, Sales & Marketing, Commercial Strategy, Process Improvement, Operational Excellence and Coaching and Leadership Development.
