Understanding IP for Innovation

30 June, 2021 @ 8:45 am - 11:00 am

Understanding IP for Innovation
Please join us after the presentation for morning tea and networking opportunities.

9.00 am

Welcome and Creating IP through Research Collaborations ( Hayley Mcgillivray and Sue Robson, Innovation Connections)

Program Overview

9.15 am Albert Ferraloro (Wrays)

IP strategy and management are very often central to business success, particularly where a company is seeking to monetise or extract value from key IP assets which have been created. But what does a good IP management framework look like, and what are some of the key do’s and don’ts which companies should heed as they negotiate their own commercialisation journey? Albert will share his views and insights on how a good IP strategy should underpin and support the commercial aims of a business, as well as providing some guidance around certain key IP risks that typically arise and how these risks can be minimised.

9.45 am Muranda Janse Van Nieuwenhuizen (Nexia)

Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in many instances, so is value in the eye of the entrepreneur. There are amazing entrepreneurial ideas out there, and many of those have been patented or underpinned by registered trademarks. However, just because an idea has been protected legally, doesn’t necessarily mean a value can be ascribed at any given point in time. And Maybe if a valuation is possible, how much should it be? We often see a complete mismatch between what the so-called entrepreneur thinks their IP is worth and what market fair value indicates. Muranda will be unveiling the factors considered by valuers to value IP. She will also be discussing the steps followed to value IP, some common valuation methodologies applied and also share some examples of IP valuations.
