Unless you are running your startup on a generous, departed family member’s inheritance, you most likely are pretty strapped for cash and knowing which baskets to place your eggs in can be an educated gamble. Of course there are valuable events and programmes out there but for every one there seem to be a dozen charlatans willing to take your money in exchange for magic beans.
Until recently, I’ve done a fairly poor job of selling my company. Yes, I was good at exciting people. No, I was not translating excitement into investment. I’ve improved through optimism, tenacity, and advice.
Two years ago, I thought I was great at presenting. I even wrote a post about my pitching techniques. However the more meetings I took, the more I suspected that my content and style were off, but since my presentations received such positive responses, it was hard to pinpoint what was wrong.
THE EVENT
Five standout tech startups will pitch to an expert panel in a live final at Fed Square, before term sheets are signed with winners for up to $5,000,000 VC funding. Winners also gain access to Oxygen Ventures’ operational resources, mentors and networks to help grow their business.
Marcus Holmes, in his article “Ideas Are Worthless!” (Feb 10, 2014), correctly points out that an idea, by itself, isn’t worth very much. If a person has an idea, but can’t develop it into a product or service, and can’t deliver that product or service effectively to a market, what is it really worth? Accordingly, from Marcus’ point of view, NDA’s (non-disclosure agreements to protect confidentiality) are also pretty much pointless. Unless you have the resources and the stamina to run a court case to enforce the NDA, usually against a better-resourced opponent, what use are they, really?
