This year’s event will be hosted by writer, performer, comedian and broadcaster Chris Taylor, best known as a member of ABC’s The Chaser. Chris is responsible for shows such as CNNNN and The Chaser’s War on Everything, as well as numerous award-winning election specials. More recently, he was the creator, co-writer and producer of the critically acclaimed Foxtel/Binge drama Upright, starring Tim Minchin.

Alongside Chris, TEDxPerth recently announced the first lineup of speakers:

  1. The brain behind ABC’s You Can’t Ask That, Director and Interviewer Kirk Docker will help us rediscover the lost art of conversation in an age of isolation and social media bubbles. Kirk will show how, through empathy and curiosity, we can all have better conversations.
  2. WA Museum Marine & Molecular Biologist, Dr. Nerida Wilson, will offer insight into the unique faces of sea dragons which allow each sea dragon to be identified. Using technology similar to facial recognition, scientists such as Dr. Wilson can now study many more sea dragons, getting a much more complete understanding of their behaviours, and in a much less intrusive way.
  3. Professional Photographer, Jarrad Seng, shows how a personal philosophy, one of “seeking discomfort”, can help achieve the most amazing results. Alongside his work as a photographer, Jarrad has featured on reality TV show Survivor and is an ambassador for Qantas and Canon.
  4. Ten years after her remarkable TEDxPerth talk about Hulbert Street, Sustainability Consultant and Community Organiser, Shani Graham, will share how her mission to develop a more resilient community grew and moved from a street in Fremantle to an entire suburb.
  5. Nyungar Elder & ARC Chief Investigator at UWA, Professor Leonard Collard, is a passionate language preserver and business owner. Professor Collard will give an insight into the shared history of Indigenous and colonialist Western Australia – and how that is reflected in our place names.
  6. Anaesthetist, columnist and former President of AMA, Dr. Andrew Miller, will share how he began to support his elderly mother and became more aware of her needs and wants – and how this changed his views on aged care in Australia.
  7. First Nations Community Leader and Business Woman, Jahna Cedar, will share how as a Nyiyaparli/Yindijbarndi woman from the Pilbara region, she navigates two worlds with differing practices and responsibilities. Jahna believes that to progress reconciliation, a more widespread understanding of this code switching is needed. Her talk is designed to help listeners develop their understanding. Jahna is Executive Director at IPS Management Consultants.
  8. Outback astronomer Greg Quicke, AKA “Space Gandalf”, will lead his audience on a journey that will give a cosmic perspective that makes all other issues seem small.
  9. Artist, entrepreneur and photographer, Lauren Crooke, will share how she uses photography as a tool to empower women, heal the wounds of personal and challenge patriarchy.

More speakers to be announced soon.

Join TEDxPerth on Saturday, April 1 for a celebration of some of this country’s most exciting thinkers and doers from past and present. Lunch is included – all you need to bring is an open mind!
