If you’ve not experienced the mad cap 54 hour whirlwind that is a Startup Weekend, then you can get your chance at the end of February as the event returns to Spacecubed for its 13th iteration.
First run in September 2012, Startup Weekend Perth has been a popular destination for those budding entrepreneurs and programmers to try out an idea, with like minded fellow travellers, and smash out a product from scratch over 2 and a bit days.
Past participants have produced everything from a platform for vet records to porn for women to food on demand at sporting events, and yes, the perennial favourite, a parking app.
The main rule is you enter with an open mind, and if your idea (which you are not to have worked on before) wins selection, you form a team and see what you can do from Friday evening through to Sunday night.
If you pitch an idea and it does not get up, then you can join any team you like, and lend a hand to their idea.
It’s all about learning, not necessarily about creating winning startups right off the bat.
Although that has happened. Simply Wall Street (which was NinjaInvest on the night) was created from Startup Weekend #2 back in early 2013. They have gone on to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and have been based in Sydney for several years now.
Over the weekend, you will experience the highs, lows, fun, and pressure that make up life at a startup, Silicon Valley style. As you learn how to create a real company, you’ll meet the very best mentors, co-founders, and potential partners who are ready to help you get started.
If you find it’s not for you, you can return to your day job Monday. Either way, it’s an experience in life’s rich tapestry, and one that comes highly recommended.
