// When you’re about to enter your 30s, life can change. In the case of the WAITTA’s Lateral Incite Awards – the pre-eminent IT Awards in WA – the whole show went online.
A very slick production was put together, kicked off by a local blues band made of IT people – playing remotely – and a Welcome to Country from Professor Simon Forrest, NAIDOC Perth Elder of the Year 2018 and Emeritus Professor at Curtin University.
Minister Dave Kelly was on hand to welcome everyone, as was WAITTA Patron Prof Lyn Beazley and Chair Sue Findlay.
Winners
It was a great night for InteliCare, recently ASX-listed aged care tech company based in Leederville, who took out two awards.
All three finalists in the Startup of the Year category went away with something too….
Startup of the Year went to SpaceDraft – Lucy Cooke’s cloud based web application that’s designed to help anyone create & share a common ‘mind’s eye’ understanding of how any space (virtual or physical) can change over time. Uno Group won a Merit Award in the same category. At the end of the night, the People’s Choice award went to Digii Social.
Social Impact Winner was InteliCare for their ‘Ageing In Place’ AI Platform, a mobile app providing family members and carers a non-invasive, real time view of their loved ones’ behaviours and real-time alerts if behaviours change. Merit Awards also went to PetRescue and Quoll! Quoll.
InteliCare also took out the Smarter Communities award, with Markr picking a merit award in that category.
Transformative Business Solution award went to Tokn Technology for their ‘Digital Transformation without Disruption’ mobile application, connecting data across all devices.
The Innovating Government award went to Node 1 Internet – who are creating 20,000 kilometres of fixed wireless network coverage for remote communities and agricultural businesses in Western Australia. Merit awards also went to Kinetic IT and Modis in that category.
The Peter Fillery Undergraduate Tertiary Student Project of the Year was Dior Etherton‘s from Curtin Uni for her 3D Reconstruction of Abnormal Viscera, which improves the way in which a patient is managing the ongoing symptoms of situs ambiguus. Merit Awards went to EXP Medical Imaging Tablet Application.
Research and Innovation Student Project of the Year winner was Luke Spartalis from ECU for EVRW (Educational Virtual Reality Welding), a virtual reality training device that provides a learning environment for people to acquire the safety knowledge, skills and understanding of the physical task of welding metal.
Research and Innovation Industry Project of the Year went to TerraVision for CASA (Comms Availability Spatial Analysis), helping mobile network operators and consumers alike better understand the performance metrics of any mobile network or communications infrastructure platform.
Final Thoughts
Being online, the whole show was over inside 90 minutes; the highlights being the multiple ‘watch parties’ going on in various nominees’ offices. Congrats to all winners, Lateral and all the sponsors and supporters, and the fine people at WAITTA for producing this technically tricky online event.
